Congratulations! Alex Morrison and Joseph Ingle Bus Services for scoring first place in the 2023 Massachusetts School Bus Driver Safety Competition (aka STAM Roadeo) sponsored by the School Transportation Association of Massachusetts. This is a huge accomplishment and one to be proud of! We thank all of the participants that competed from all over the the state. We appreciate their attention to safety and the care they show to each student they transport to school. School bus drivers are essential to the education of our precious children. We hope all of you will recognize them for their continued dedication to safety.

WE INVITE ALL SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS IN MASSACHUSETTS TO ENTER!

THE 2023 MASSACHUSETTS SCHOOL BUS DRIVER SAFETY COMPETITION!

Instructors can choose to give their drivers who participate of in-service training!!

The First Place winner will get an expense paid stay at the Sea Crest Hotel in Falmouth MA, July 23rd to July 26 to attend the STAM Convention & Trade Show.

There will be cash awards of $200, $100, and $50 to the top three winners!!!

The “Roadeo” is a lot of FUN! Contestants and Judges please invite your families to attend the competition too!

COVID-19: ALL IN ATTENDANCE MUST BE FULLY VACCINATED.  Please bring proof of vaccination or a negative test if you have a medical condition or closely held religious belief that prevents vaccination. Those with a valid accommodation for COVID-19 are allowed to provide printed or digital proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen tests administered by a medical provider within 48 hours of being at any Bristol location.

If you’ve never been involved before, please join us this year, we hope to see you there!!! A LIGHT BREAKFAST OF BREADS AND PASTRIES AND A BARBECUE LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED.

We will also present the MASSACHUSETTS SAFE SCHOOL BUS DRIVER AWARDS at the School Bus Driver Safety Competition. We will present each Safe Driver with a Certificate for their number of years of safe driving! Winners must be present to receive their prizes!

To recognize school bus drivers with outstanding safe driving records, eligible drivers will receive certificates commemorating 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years of school bus driving without a “preventable accident.” A “Preventable accident” is defined by the National Safety Council as “any accident in which the driver failed to do everything reasonable to prevent the accident.”

Employers and school districts are invited to nominate any Massachusetts school bus drivers who qualify for awards based on the accident-free intervals stated above. (Milestone years of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30.)

Do you qualify to compete?  You qualify to compete if you have had no preventable accidents driving the school bus within the past year.

How to Prepare to Participate: Please print the revised Roadeo Manual (scroll down).  In the manual, you will find all the rules and regulations that govern the competition and a description of prizes and awards. For those who may not have access to a printer, there are a limited number of manuals available. Please email the STAM office to request one.

As in the past, the Roadeo Competition has the major components of:

     

      • Vehicle (Pre-Trip) Inspection or “Circle Check”

       

        • Written Examination:  50 multiple choice questions based on the General Knowledge and Passenger Endorsement sections of the CDL Manual and general school bus operations in Massachusetts.

         

          • Driving Competition:  The individual events in this years’ driving competition will include:  Height Judgement, Riding Judge, Back-Up Test, Curb Line, Stop Line, Diminishing Clearance, Student Loading, Right Turn, Straight Line, Offset Alley, Back-Up Alley and Railroad Crossing.

        PRIZES:

        At the Massachusetts Safety Competition, trophies AND CASH PRIZES will be presented to the first, second, and third-place winning drivers as well as to the company or school district they represent. The Carl “Pete” Eastman Memorial Rookie of the Year Trophy is also awarded to the highest scoring first-year contestant. All of these awards make impressive decorative items for offices, while everything is awarded in duplicate so that the individual, as well as the employer, has a permanent symbol of his or her participation.

        Directions to Bristol Community College:  Take Route 24 to Exit 5 to President Ave.  Follow signs halfway around rotary.  Turn Right at first light onto Elsbree Street.  BCC is about ½ mile down on right.

        LAST DAY TO REGISTER IS APRIL 2, 2023

        Registration will begin at 8AM and the competition will begin at 9AM.

        CONTESTANTS THAT ARRIVE LATER THAN 8:45AM WILL BE DISQUALIFIED

        LAST DAY TO REGISTER IS APRIL 3, 2023

        2019 WINNERS

        The
        competition was held on a beautiful summer day, Sunday, June 23rd at
        Bristol Community College, Fall River, MA.  School bus driver
        contestants and volunteer judges from all over the state of
        Massachusetts were in attendance at the STAM “Roadeo”.

        The
        first place winner won an expense paid trip from STAM to attend the
        NSTA’s International Safety Competition held in Austin, Texas. July 20th
        and 21st.
